Mineral + hormone explanations.

Most women have been taught that PMS, mood swings, and period pain are just “part of being a woman.” They’re told their symptoms are normal, inevitable, or psychological. But none of this is true. PMS is common, but it is not normal. Mood swings are common, but they are not inevitable. Painful cycles are common, but they are not the body’s natural state. These symptoms are not signs of hormonal failure—they are signs of imbalance. More specifically, they are signs of mineral depletion and hormone dysregulation caused by stress, trauma, poor nourishment, toxic load, and a disrupted nervous system. When hormones struggle, minerals are almost always at the root.

Why PMS Happens

PMS is not caused by “too many hormones.” It’s caused by hormones trying to function in a depleted environment. Estrogen rises in the first half of the cycle, and progesterone rises in the second. When minerals are deficient, neither hormone can stabilize properly. Low magnesium, low sodium, low potassium, low zinc, and low phosphorus place the body into a heightened stress state. This amplifies emotional reactivity, water retention, cravings, anxiety, irritability, and sensitivity to everything. PMS is not estrogen being dramatic—it is the body revealing what it does not have enough of.

The Mineral Imbalances Behind PMS

Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common drivers of PMS symptoms. Magnesium calms the nervous system, eases cramps, stabilizes mood, and supports progesterone production. When magnesium is low, cortisol rises, cramps worsen, and emotions become amplified. Sodium and potassium are the foundation of adrenal stability and blood sugar regulation. When they are low, irritability, mood swings, fatigue, dizziness, and cravings intensify before the period. Zinc supports progesterone, skin clarity, immune balance, and ovulation. Low zinc worsens acne, cravings, breast tenderness, heavy bleeding, and emotional instability. Phosphorus is required for cellular energy. When it’s low, fatigue and brain fog worsen, making PMS feel heavier and harder to navigate. These mineral patterns show up consistently on HTMA—this is biology, not mystery.

Why Mood Swings Happen

Hormones affect mood, but minerals regulate hormones. Mood swings are not emotional weakness; they are biochemical instability. When minerals are low, blood sugar becomes erratic, cortisol spikes more easily, and neurotransmitters lose balance. Estrogen becomes too high relative to progesterone, creating irritability, restlessness, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm. Progesterone becomes too low to buffer stress, which increases sensitivity, hopelessness, crying spells, and racing thoughts. The mood symptoms women experience before their period are almost always rooted in a nervous system that does not have enough minerals to stabilize itself.

Why Pain Is NOT Normal

Period pain is not a punishment, a flaw, or a genetic curse. It is inflammation—driven by prostaglandins, mineral deficiency, estrogen dominance, poor liver detox, and chronic stress. Low magnesium increases uterine cramping. Low potassium increases muscle tension and disrupts smooth muscle relaxation. Low zinc increases inflammation. Low sodium increases cortisol, which increases prostaglandins. Estrogen dominance (too much estrogen relative to progesterone) causes heavier bleeding, clotting, breast pain, and pelvic discomfort. The pain is not random—it is the physical expression of imbalance. When minerals are restored and inflammation lowers, pain decreases dramatically or disappears.

Hormones Cannot Work Without Minerals

Hormones are messengers. Minerals are the language they speak. A woman cannot have balanced hormones if her minerals are depleted. Progesterone cannot rise without magnesium and zinc. Estrogen cannot detox without copper balance, zinc, magnesium, and B-vitamins. Cortisol cannot regulate without sodium and potassium. Thyroid hormones cannot convert without selenium and zinc. When minerals are low, hormones become loud, unstable, and erratic. The body is not broken. It is asking for resources.

Stress Makes All PMS Worse

The nervous system dictates hormone behavior. When the body is in fight-or-flight, progesterone drops, estrogen becomes more volatile, and the luteal phase becomes shorter, heavier, and more symptomatic. Stress depletes minerals, weakens digestion, disrupts sleep, alters blood sugar, and increases inflammation—all of which worsen PMS. This is why women with trauma histories often experience more intense PMS: their nervous system has been in survival mode for years, and survival mode drains the very minerals the hormonal system needs to function.

Your Symptoms Are Messages, Not Malfunctions

PMS, mood swings, and painful cycles are not inevitable. They are indicators of imbalance, depletion, and nervous-system overwhelm. When minerals are replenished, blood sugar is stabilized, stress is reduced, nourishment is consistent, and the nervous system feels safe, hormones regulate naturally. The body does not want to suffer. It simply cannot cycle smoothly when it is under-resourced. Fix the minerals, support the nervous system, nourish the blood sugar, and the painful patterns soften. Balanced hormones are not a luxury—they are the result of a nourished internal environment.

Hormones

Stress is one of the most overlooked factors in healing. It impacts hormones, digestion, mineral absorption, detoxification, and overall well-being. When chronic stress remains high, it can slow progress, even in the face of incredible strides in other areas of health. Today, we’re sharing the journey of a client who has made leaps and bounds in her mineral balancing and detox process but continues to battle the one thing holding her back: an unrelenting stress response.

A Journey of Mineral Replenishment and Heavy Metal Detox

When we first started working with this client, her HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) results showed significant imbalances—low magnesium, depleted sodium and potassium, and heavy metal accumulation, including aluminum and arsenic. Her body was under high levels of stress, depleting minerals and impairing detox pathways. Over time, with a targeted remineralization plan, her body began to show signs of deep healing.

Minerals rebounding – Her magnesium, sodium, and potassium levels are improving, supporting adrenal health and cellular function.
Heavy metal detox activated – She’s successfully eliminating aluminum and arsenic, showing her body is now mobilizing stored toxins.
Energy is improving – With the right mineral support, she’s experiencing better digestion, sleep, and mental clarity.

Yet, despite all this progress, stress remains the biggest hurdle.

The Roadblock: A Constant Stress Response

One of the most fascinating things about mineral balancing is how stress can determine whether the body holds onto toxins or lets them go. Our client’s body has detox pathways open, minerals replenished, and energy improving, but her nervous system is still stuck in high alert.

Why does this matter? Chronic stress increases cortisol, depletes key minerals like magnesium and zinc, and makes it harder for the body to fully detox and heal. When stress is ongoing, the body continues to prioritize survival mode over deeper restoration.

Some of the patterns we’re seeing in her current progress:
➡️ Fluctuating sodium and potassium levels – Indicators of continued adrenal strain
➡️ Episodes of fatigue followed by high energy crashes – A sign that her nervous system is still running in overdrive
➡️ Delayed detox reactions – Her body is releasing toxins, but stress is slowing down the process of fully eliminating them

Breaking the Cycle: How She’s Working Through It

The good news? She’s aware of the impact stress has on her body and is actively working on shifting this pattern. Healing isn’t just about minerals and detoxing—it’s also about retraining the body to feel safe.

Here are some of the key strategies we’re integrating to help her overcome this stress barrier:

🌿 Nervous system regulation – Guided breathwork, grounding, and nervous system-focused herbal support to retrain the body’s response to stress.
💤 Sleep hygiene and deep rest – Creating true parasympathetic recovery time so the body has space to repair.
🍵 Adaptogenic and nervine herbs – Supporting adrenal balance with gentle, nourishing herbal allies to calm cortisol spikes.
🌀 Shifting mindset patterns – Helping her recognize subconscious stress loops and create a daily practice of release and renewal.

The Big Takeaway: Healing is Holistic

This client’s journey is proof that mineral balancing and detoxification work, but true healing requires addressing the full picture—including stress. The fact that she is eliminating aluminum and arsenic is a huge win. The progress in her energy, digestion, and adrenal support is remarkable. Now, the final piece of the puzzle is learning to fully step out of survival mode and allow her body to enter a deeper state of healing.

If you’re on a similar journey, know that stress is not just “mental”—it has a profound biochemical impact on your minerals, detox pathways, and energy. Balancing your body isn’t just about what you take—it’s about how you live, breathe, and process the world around you.

If this resonates with you, and you’re ready to break through your own stress barriers and take your healing deeper, we’d love to support you. Healing is possible—you just have to give your body permission to let go.

Let’s walk this journey together. 💛

Healing isn’t just about the big changes—it’s about the small, consistent choices we make each day to honor our well-being.

Gratitude for a Year of Growth

As we move into this new chapter, we want to express our deepest gratitude. Thank you for your trust, your courage, and your commitment to healing. This year, we’ve seen your determination to detoxify, to let go of what no longer serves you, and to rebuild from the inside out. We see you, and we honor the work you’re doing.

This year, let’s continue the journey with intention, courage, and an unwavering connection to our values. Let’s take time to live every day—deeply, fully, and in harmony with the world around us.

Here’s to a year of healing, growth, and balance. We’re excited to walk this path with you.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Caryn & Kristen

Holistic Living

The health of your digestive system is central to your overall well-being. It impacts energy levels, mental clarity, immunity, and even emotional balance. Yet, chronic digestive issues like bloating, constipation, indigestion, or food intolerances are increasingly common. While many seek relief through elimination diets or supplements, these approaches often treat symptoms rather than addressing the root cause.

This is where Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) shines as a powerful tool in the journey to digestive healing.

Understanding HTMA and Digestive Health

HTMA is a non-invasive test that analyzes mineral levels and patterns in your hair. These mineral imbalances not only reflect nutritional deficiencies but also reveal deeper physiological insights into how your digestive system is functioning. Minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium play critical roles in gut health, supporting everything from stomach acid production to enzyme activity and intestinal motility.

When these minerals are out of balance, digestive issues can arise or persist. HTMA gives us the data to identify these imbalances and create a personalized plan to support your body’s healing.

How Mineral Imbalances Impact Digestion

Mineral imbalances revealed through HTMA can highlight some of the most common root causes of digestive dysfunction:

1. Low Stomach Acid

Minerals like sodium, chloride, and zinc are crucial for producing stomach acid (HCl). Without sufficient HCl, your body cannot properly break down proteins or absorb key nutrients, leading to symptoms like bloating, indigestion, and nutrient deficiencies. HTMA can reveal deficiencies that contribute to this issue and guide replenishment strategies.

2. Stress and Digestive Function

Chronic stress depletes magnesium, sodium, and potassium, minerals essential for proper gut motility and enzyme production. Elevated stress markers on HTMA, such as high calcium relative to magnesium or inverted sodium-to-potassium ratios, often correlate with stress-induced digestive complaints like IBS or constipation.

3. Detox Pathways and Gut Health

Your digestive system is a key part of your body’s detoxification pathways. Mineral imbalances can impair the liver’s ability to detoxify properly, leading to a sluggish system that contributes to inflammation, candida overgrowth, and leaky gut. HTMA allows us to assess these imbalances and recommend protocols to gently support detoxification.

4. Heavy Metal Toxicity

Heavy metals like mercury, lead, and aluminum can disrupt gut flora and contribute to inflammation in the digestive tract. HTMA reveals the presence of these toxic metals and informs protocols for safely eliminating them, allowing the gut to heal.

The Healing Power of HTMA-Guided Protocols

Using the insights from HTMA, a targeted approach to digestive healing can be implemented. This includes:

1. Mineral Rebalancing

Replenishing depleted minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc is foundational. Specific recommendations tailored to your HTMA results can optimize digestion and overall vitality.

2. Dietary Adjustments

Based on your metabolic type (fast or slow oxidizer), HTMA-guided nutrition can fine-tune your macronutrient ratios to support digestion. For example, fast oxidizers benefit from higher fats and proteins, while slow oxidizers often need more carbohydrates for energy.

3. Digestive Support

Incorporating practices like bitters for stimulating bile production, digestive enzymes, or targeted supplements can address specific deficiencies identified through HTMA.

4. Detoxification Support

Healing the gut often requires gentle detoxification. Supporting the lymphatic system, liver, and kidneys with herbs, saunas, and detoxifying foods can reduce toxic burdens and promote gut healing.

5. Stress Management

High-stress markers on HTMA call for strategies like mindfulness, yoga nidra, or adaptogenic herbs to calm the nervous system and improve digestion.

Nutrition, Wellness

In recent years, the rise of chronic diseases and inflammatory conditions has led many health-conscious individuals to scrutinize their diets more closely. One of the most significant yet often overlooked contributors to these health issues is the widespread use of seed oils in our food supply. These oils, often marketed as “heart-healthy” alternatives, may actually be doing more harm than good. Let’s dive into why seed oils are problematic and how they can negatively impact your body, especially when it comes to inflammation.

What Are Seed Oils?

Seed oils, also known as vegetable oils, are extracted from various seeds such as soybeans, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, and canola. These oils are ubiquitous in processed foods, restaurant meals, and even in products labeled as “healthy.” They’re often used because they are cheap to produce and have a long shelf life, making them a favorite in the food industry.

The Problem with Seed Oils

While they might seem harmless, seed oils are highly processed and refined, involving high heat and chemical solvents to extract the oil from the seeds. This process can strip the oils of any beneficial nutrients, leaving behind a product that is more damaging than nourishing.

One of the primary concerns with seed oils is their high content of omega-6 fatty acids. While omega-6 fatty acids are essential for the body in small amounts, the modern diet tends to provide an excessive amount, leading to an imbalanced ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. This imbalance is where the trouble begins.

How Seed Oils Promote Inflammation

1. Omega-6 Fatty Acid Imbalance: The human body requires a balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids to function optimally. Omega-3s, found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-6s, on the other hand, are pro-inflammatory when consumed in excess. The typical Western diet, laden with seed oils, skews this ratio, creating a pro-inflammatory environment in the body.
2. Oxidative Stress: The processing methods used to create seed oils often involve high heat, which can lead to the formation of harmful compounds such as trans fats and oxidized fatty acids. These compounds are known to increase oxidative stress in the body, a key driver of chronic inflammation. Over time, this oxidative stress can contribute to a host of health problems, including heart disease, arthritis, and even certain types of cancer.
3. Interference with Cellular Function: The fatty acids in seed oils can incorporate into the cell membranes, making them more rigid and less fluid. This can impair the function of cell receptors and disrupt normal cellular communication, leading to increased inflammation and a higher risk of chronic disease.
4. Gut Health Disruption: Emerging research suggests that seed oils may also negatively impact gut health by promoting the growth of harmful bacteria and contributing to gut permeability or “leaky gut.” A compromised gut lining allows toxins and inflammatory compounds to enter the bloodstream, further fueling systemic inflammation.

The Inflammatory Cascade

When you regularly consume seed oils, the excess omega-6 fatty acids can trigger an inflammatory cascade. Your body responds to the imbalance by producing more pro-inflammatory molecules, such as prostaglandins and cytokines. Over time, this chronic inflammation can lead to a range of health issues, including:

• Cardiovascular Disease: Chronic inflammation is a well-known risk factor for heart disease. The consumption of seed oils has been linked to an increase in LDL cholesterol oxidation, which is a key step in the development of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
• Arthritis and Joint Pain: Inflammatory joint conditions, such as arthritis, can be exacerbated by the consumption of seed oils. The pro-inflammatory compounds produced from omega-6 fatty acids can contribute to joint degradation and pain.
• Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes: Chronic inflammation is also a driving factor in insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Seed oils, with their pro-inflammatory properties, can worsen insulin resistance and contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome.
• Autoimmune Conditions: For those with autoimmune disorders, reducing inflammation is critical. Seed oils can worsen the inflammatory response, potentially triggering flare-ups and exacerbating symptoms.

Making Healthier Choices

Given the potential risks associated with seed oils, it’s wise to limit their presence in your diet. Here are some tips for reducing your intake:

• Choose Healthier Fats: Opt for natural, unrefined fats such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter. These fats are more stable and less likely to promote inflammation.
• Read Labels Carefully: Seed oils are hidden in many processed foods, from salad dressings to snacks. Make it a habit to read ingredient labels and choose products made with healthier fats.
• Cook at Home: Preparing your meals at home allows you to control the types of oils you use, reducing your exposure to seed oils.
• Prioritize Omega-3 Rich Foods: Balance your omega-6 intake by incorporating more omega-3 rich foods into your diet, such as fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Seed oils may be a staple in the modern diet, but their impact on inflammation and overall health is concerning. By understanding the risks associated with these oils and making informed choices, you can take proactive steps to reduce inflammation and support your body’s natural healing processes. Remember, small changes in your diet can lead to significant improvements in your health and well-being over time.

Digestive health is a cornerstone of overall wellness, impacting everything from our ability to absorb nutrients to our mood and immune system. While diet, hydration, and lifestyle choices play significant roles, the balance of minerals in our body is also crucial for optimal digestion. Lets explore how minerals affect the digestive system, particularly focusing on bloating, digestive inefficiencies, and the interconnected roles of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and small intestine.

Bloating is a common digestive issue, often resulting from diet or the way the body handles certain foods. However, an imbalance in minerals like magnesium, potassium, and sodium can significantly exacerbate these symptoms. Magnesium, for example, helps relax the muscles in the digestive tract, which can alleviate cramping and bloating. Potassium aids in regulating fluid balance and helps manage sodium levels, which, when unbalanced, can lead to bloating and water retention.

The inability to properly digest food can stem from a lack of essential minerals. Zinc, for instance, is critical for the production of stomach acid, which is necessary for breaking down food particles. A deficiency in zinc can lead to inadequate gastric acid production, resulting in poor digestion and nutrient absorption.

Stress also profoundly impacts digestion. It diverts energy and blood flow away from the digestive organs to the muscles and brain. Calcium and magnesium are vital during these times as they help the body manage the physiological responses to stress. Adequate levels ensure that the digestive system does not completely shut down under stress.

The liver, gallbladder, and pancreas play pivotal roles in digestion, particularly in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. The liver produces bile, stored and concentrated in the gallbladder before being released into the small intestine to aid in fat digestion. The pancreas, meanwhile, produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate, helping break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into absorbable units while neutralizing stomach acid to create a suitable pH environment in the small intestine.

Minerals like iron and copper are crucial for liver function, as they are involved in detoxifying metabolic byproducts and producing bile. A deficiency in these minerals can impair these processes, leading to inefficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

For individuals struggling with digestive inefficiencies, supplementing with the right minerals can provide relief and support proper digestive function. It’s important to approach supplementation carefully, ideally under the guidance of a healthcare provider, to maintain the delicate balance necessary for health.

Calcium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus supplements can support the stomach, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas functions, enhancing overall digestive health. However, excessive supplementation can lead to imbalances and should be monitored closely.

A balanced intake of essential minerals is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Ensuring you receive an adequate amount of these minerals, whether through diet or supplements, can help alleviate common issues like bloating and improve the efficiency of your digestion. Regular check-ups and consultations with healthcare professionals can provide personalized advice and adjustments to your dietary plan, helping you achieve and maintain optimal digestive health.

For those experiencing persistent digestive issues, it may be beneficial to assess mineral levels and consider whether an imbalance is contributing to the problem. Remember, a healthy digestive system is foundational to overall health and well-being.

Curious about your mineral levels? Getting your hair mineral content analyzed (HTMA) can provide a deep insight into your bodys systems and the overabundance or depletion of minerals within your body. HTMA is the road to root cause healing through remineralization.

Nutrition, Wellness

Calcium is not just the most abundant mineral in the body; it’s also a crucial player in overall health and wellness. This blog post explores how calcium is utilized in the body, its synergy with other minerals, and the complexities of obtaining calcium through food versus supplements.

Calciums Role in the Body

Calcium is best known for its role in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. However, its responsibilities extend far beyond just bone health. It is vital in blood clotting, muscle contraction, and nerve signal transmission. Essentially, without calcium, the human body would not be able to perform most of its basic functions.

Interactions with Other Minerals

Calcium doesn’t work alone. It interacts with several other minerals and vitamins that help enhance its absorption and effectiveness:

  • Vitamin D: This is perhaps calcium’s best partner. Vitamin D significantly enhances calcium absorption in the intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, the body cannot absorb enough calcium, regardless of intake.

  • Magnesium: Magnesium aids in converting vitamin D into its active form, which in turn helps absorb calcium. Additionally, magnesium is needed for proper calcium use in cells.

  • Phosphorus: This mineral works closely with calcium to strengthen bones and teeth. However, balance is key, as too much phosphorus can hinder calcium absorption.

Calcium Absorption: Food vs. Supplements

Obtaining calcium from food sources is the most natural way for the body to process and use this mineral. Foods high in calcium include dairy products like milk and cheese, leafy green vegetables, and fortified foods. When calcium is consumed through these natural sources, it’s often accompanied by other beneficial nutrients that aid in its absorption and use.

On the other hand, calcium supplements can sometimes be a double-edged sword. While they are an effective way to meet calcium needs when dietary intake is insufficient, they must be taken carefully:

1. Over-supplementation Risks: Excessive intake of calcium supplements might lead to hypercalcemia, a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood, which can weaken bones, create kidney stones, and interfere with heart and brain function.

2. Interaction with Medications: Calcium supplements can also interact with various medications, reducing their effectiveness. For instance, they can diminish the absorption of iron and zinc.

An interesting aspect of calcium supplementation is its potential to extract calcium from the body rather than replace it. This phenomenon occurs primarily due to the imbalances it can create in the bodys natural mineral content. For example, high levels of calcium can lead to lower levels of magnesium in the body, which is essential for proper calcium usage. When magnesium levels are too low, it can result in calcium being deposited in places where it shouldnt be, such as the arteries or soft tissues, rather than in bones where it is needed.

Moreover, without adequate levels of vitamin K2, which directs calcium to be deposited in the bones, excessive calcium from supplements might deposit in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease. Thus, it is crucial to consider the balance of minerals and vitamins in the body when taking supplements.

Calcium is undeniably vital for health, but how we choose to consume it can affect its benefits. Prioritizing a balanced diet rich in natural sources of calcium and other nutrients is the best approach. However, if supplements are necessary, they should be taken under professional guidance to ensure they contribute positively to health without unintended drawbacks.

If youre interested in learning more about your individual mineral levels and ensuring your mineral intake is properly balanced, consider contacting our practitioners. They can provide personalized guidance and comprehensive assessments to your health through diet and holistic supplementation.

Nutrition, Wellness

Hormonal imbalances have become increasingly common in today’s fast-paced world. They can manifest in a variety of ways, impacting both men and women across different stages of life. Understanding the symptoms, underlying causes, and adopting holistic healing methods can provide lasting solutions to these imbalances.

The symptoms of hormonal imbalances can vary widely depending on which hormones are affected. Common signs include fatigue, weight gain or loss, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and changes in appetite or digestion. Women may experience irregular menstrual cycles, while men might face reduced libido or erectile dysfunction. Skin issues such as acne, as well as hair loss or thinning, can also be indicative of hormonal imbalances.

Hormonal imbalance symptoms can persist over a long period if not addressed properly. The longevity of these symptoms often results from underlying causes that are not immediately apparent. Key factors contributing to hormonal imbalances include:

  • Lack of Absorption: Poor gut health can lead to inadequate absorption of nutrients, affecting the body’s hormonal balance.

  • Mineral Deficiencies: Adequate levels of minerals are crucial for hormone production and regulation. Mineral deficiencies can thus significantly disrupt hormonal balance.

  • Chronic Stress: Stress prompts the body to release cortisol, a hormone that, when consistently elevated, can lead to significant imbalances in other hormones.

Holistic healing focuses on addressing the root causes of hormonal imbalances rather than just alleviating symptoms. A key approach in this realm is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA).

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA): HTMA is a diagnostic test that measures the mineral content in the hair. This test can reveal mineral deficiencies and heavy metal toxicities, which are often at the heart of hormonal imbalances. By understanding an individual’s unique mineral profile, a tailored approach to correcting imbalances can be developed.

Remineralization: Based on the outcomes of HTMA, a personalized remineralization program can be initiated.
